Enabling Disk-Based Cache Like caching in general, SharePoint s Disk-Based Cache is disabled by default When disabled, items, such as images, are pulled from the SharePoint Database every time they are needed When enabled, a local copy is put on the front-end web server To enable this requires modifying the webconfig file for the SharePoint Site, which is located in the root of the SharePoint Web Site (use IIS Manager to find the correct folder if need be) Navigate to this folder, make a backup copy of the webconfig file, and then open it in an editor like Visual Studio or Notepad Search for the word Blob until you find the line that looks like this:

The Microsoft Office Trust Center (see Figure 16-10) was designed to protect against hackers that can do harm with add-ins Microsoft has designed specific criteria that add-ins must meet to be accepted Click the hyperlinks to see more information about the criteria

The settings here will set up how the cache will operate, starting with the location This is set by default to be C:\blobCache, which you ll need to change (using the system drive as a location is always a bad idea) Next, you ll need to review the list of file type extensions that will be stored; if you use files other than these (like PDFs), you can add the extension type(s) here The maxSize sets the total number of megabytes to maintain in the cache Finally, the enabled option must be set to true Once you have made the desired changes, save this file Next, you must run an IISReset to reset the site and then actually enable the cache The folder you choose will be created automatically; however, there are a few things to watch out for here: If an invalid file location (like the wrong drive) is used, the site will still operate but performance will degrade quickly very quickly! Don t use any drive that isn t physically connected to the system or is tight on space The account used to manage the files here is the one that is running the application pool for the particular Site Collection; the folder selected (and any above it, if it s nested) must have ACLs that grant full privilege to this account (Modify Rights)

Site Collection Output Cache This option allows the enabling and disabling of caching as well as the general site settings and caching profiles Clicking the Site Collection Output Cache link opens the Settings Page:
